What it’s for
Parts to tidy cables: a clip that hooks onto the edge of the desk and holds the chargers, combs to group several cables in parallel, cable guides that stick or screw on, winders for headphones and raceways with a snap-on lid. The cables go in by pressing through an opening narrower than the cable and don’t come out.
Ideas
- Keep the phone chargers always at hand on the edge of the desk.
- Tidy the cables behind the PC or the TV.
- Route a cable along the wall or under the table.
- Wind up the headphones to carry them in the bag without tangling.
Step by step
- Choose a preset or the type of part in «Part».
- Measure the diameter of your cables and set it in «Cable diameter».
- Choose how many cables and adjust the grip of the opening.
- Fill in the sizes specific to the type (desk thickness, raceway length, etc.).
- Export and print. Try it with a cable: if it doesn’t go in, raise the grip; if it comes out, lower it.
Tips
- Measure the cable with calipers: the opening is calculated from that diameter.
- Print in PETG so the tabs flex without breaking with use.
- The desk clip squeezes 0.4 mm: measure the board thickness at the edge carefully.
- For the raceway, the lid snaps on: if it’s loose, put a bit of tape on the edges.
Presets
Parameters
Part
Which type of organizer and for which cables.
Type of organizer: desk clip (hooks onto the edge of the board), comb (several cables in a row), cable guide (sticks or screws onto a surface), winder (to wind up a cable) or raceway with lid (a channel that covers the cables).
Diameter of your cables. A common USB cable is 3.5–4.5 mm; a laptop one, 5–7 mm. Measure it with calipers.
Number of cables the part holds. The part gets longer with each cable.
Rows of the comb. With 2 rows twice as many cables fit in the same width.
Thickness of the comb or winder. Thicker is sturdier.
Width of the cable guide (along the cable). Wider is sturdier.
Width of each slot’s opening as a proportion of the cable. With 0.75 the cable goes in by pressing and doesn’t come out; less is firmer but harder to push in.
Desk clip
Dimensions of the desk edge where it hooks on.
Thickness of the desk board, measured at the edge. The clip squeezes 0.4 mm so it stays firm.
Length of the clip’s jaws, what grips the board. Longer grips more firmly.
Cable pass-through
How the cable guide is attached.
«Double-sided tape»: flat base to stick on. «Screw»: with a countersunk hole to screw it on.
Winder
Size of the winder.
Length of the winder. Longer holds more cable per turn.
Width of the winder. It has to fit comfortably in the pocket or the case.
Raceway
Dimensions of the raceway with lid.
Length of each raceway section. Up to 220 mm fits most printers; for more, print several sections.
Inner width of the raceway: the cables side by side have to fit.
Inner height of the raceway. The thickest cable has to fit with a bit of play.
Adds holes in the raceway’s bottom to screw it on. Without holes it’s stuck on with double-sided tape.
